NTM President Donna Newell will be presenting at the 2026 National Hydraulic Engineering Conference (NHEC), August 24-28, 2026, in Burlington, Vermont.
Her presentation, “Interstate 676 Post Hurricane Ida Flood Study,” will discuss the two-dimensional (2D) hydraulic study that was developed to evaluate conditions during Hurricane Ida on Interstate 676 (I-676) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Hurricane Ida made landfall in August 2021 as a powerful Category 4 hurricane that resulted in heavy precipitation, with part of southeastern Pennsylvania receiving up to 10 inches of rainfall in a 24-hour period. NTM performed a detailed 2D hydraulic analysis to evaluate the conditions during Hurricane Ida that resulted in flooding at the Vine Street Expressway. The 2D hydraulic results were used to identify critical locations where flow from the Schuylkill River may inundate the Vine Street Expressway which helped to understand its susceptibility to flood waters from the Schuylkill River and will be used to evaluate possible solutions to reduce future flooding of the Vine Street Expressway.
