NTM Senior Historian Gabrielle Vicari’s research of the East Texas VOR/DME in Lehigh County was recently featured in an article written by Kristina Thompson on the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation’s website titled, “UFO? Oversized Bowling Pin? Mid-Century Navigational Aid.”
VOR/DME stands for “very high frequency omnidirectional radio range/distance measuring equipment.” VOR helps pilots determine their plane’s bearing to or from the VOR’s location and DME refers to equipment using radio signals to measure the plane’s distance to a fixed location. Both of these are located in the same location at the East Texas VOR/DME, allowing them to chart their location more accurately.
